Showing FileZilla Hidden Files (.htaccess included)

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

Webmasters like myself are frequently using ftp upload programs.  The one I tend to use the most is an open source one named FileZilla.  It’s free (since it is open source) and gets the job done without hassle (usually).

Before going out and purchasing an FTP program I would definitely recommend you check out FileZilla.

Now, on to the point of this post.   By default, FileZilla does not show all files in your webhosting account.  Instead (for your security) it does not show hidden files.  This however can cause issues.

Every time I install FileZilla, where ever that may be, the first thing I do is show all files.  The process for this has been changed since previous versions of FileZilla so I wanted to fill every one in as it is good to know.

As of now, I use version 3.3.0.1.  To show all files (force showing hidden files) you simply:

Click server on the menu   –>  Choose “Force Showing Hidden Files”

You should then be able to view all your files in your webhosting account.

I hope this helps you in the future, it is very handy to know!

Why Is It Review Sites Work?

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Review sites are springing up all around the net at a pace which is dizzying. Why is this the case? Is there money to be made with them or are the creators putting these sites up for benevolent reasons?

Put simply, there are a myriad of them because it’s good for business. No matter what business you are involved with, review sites are becoming an ever more important part of your marketing. We are living in a world which is becoming more and more distracting through a increasing array of choices presented to us all the time.

We as a consumer society simply do not have the time to methodically look into the purchase choices we want to make and as a direct result we need to create shortcuts in our decision making process.

Can you remember the last high priced thing you bought. Did you pull out the credit card on the spur of the moment and go for it. I’m betting not – I’m betting you probably asked around with friends and neighbours to get their advice and see if any of them had previously bought the item in question.

You were looking for their advice and their opinions matter.

Like it or not, we are all very similar when it comes to this buying decision making activity. We are at heart a mass marketing organism and are persuaded by other peoples opinions – even the opinions of total strangers!

There are review sites on every conceivable subject known to man, from corporate social responsibility through to the best types of phones you should purchase. You can conduct a fast search on any search engine and you are almost guaranteed to locate some useful reviews very quickly.

Does this mean you blindly trust all the reviews you come across? Definitely not. There are plenty of people out there submitting reviews with their own agenda. You must not put faith solely on the word of a solitary review. Instead, put the review in context, try to get a few more reviews (perhaps put in some more searches with keywords like “scam” as an example to find some alternative viewpoints.

Review sites work, have worked and will continue to work because they provide us the alluring promise of discovering useful information about things we are interested in and protecting the most important resource we have – time.
