I have decided to introduce you to one of my favorite up and coming social media type of networks.  It is called Twitter and I have been testing it out for some time now.  Before I recommend something, I want to ensure that I myself enjoy it so that there will be a better chance that you will enjoy it also!

So what is Twitter?

Well, it is a micro-blogging service that allows you to network with fellow professionals, friends, and family. It allows you to post real-time updates as to your actions or your thoughts and receive updates from those you follow.  These updates have come to be known as “tweets” because it flows well with the twitter name.

It is a great way to find other people or businesses who have a similar interest as yourself.  You will be able to follow their updates, and if they so choose to they can follow your updates as well.

When the people you choose to follow post an update, you will be able to see that update on your main page.  This obviously is quite a valuable tool for sending important updates to those who have an interest in you or your business.

Twitter has provided a new marketing medium for businesses around the world to use…and effectively if they are smart.  With the capability to post an update to all those who follow you, you can get your message out immediately.  Such updates can take on many forms in terms of aiding your marketing efforts: For example, you may post an update saying that you just updated your website or your blog.  You may post an update about your release or upcoming release of a new product or service.  Heck, you can even easily direct people to a website simply because you recommend it.

Overall, there are many ways that you can use Twitter to not just make more business and personal contacts, but also to market your business more effectively.

I will warn you though…tweeting can become quite addicting!

I recommend checking it out if you are not already a member. It is free to sign up and use, so it can’t hurt to try it out and see what you think of it.  I am sure you will find it quite valuable once you get used to it, you may even make a few very important contacts!

P.S. I have personally followed a few people who only seem to promote one thing over and over again, this is sort of like spamming your twitter list in my opinion.  I suggest you don’t get into this habit as all I do for such people is stop following their updates…I am sure this is similar for others too.
