What Is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

SEO is a term that is used every single day by people in many different markets who have a website presence on the Internet. It is ultimately optimizing your website so that you can achieve top results in the search engines. If you use the Internet you no doubt have used a search engine at some time. They are the most widely used Internet tool to search for information...you know Google for example is a search engine. When you want to search for something on the Internet you probably use a search engine such as Google or Yahoo and businesses and individuals want their websites to appear highly in the search results when specific terms are searched for. Because of the popularity of search engines, SEO is also a hot topic and very important to businesses and individuals around the world.

Most people who use search engines do not search through all the results to find the answer they are looking for. This is because search engine have websites from around the world indexed in their system so that when a search is performed relevant websites will appear...but this can easily include hundreds of millions of web pages. Ouch right...there is no way you are going to search through all those results. Don't quote me on this but if my memory recalls me correctly people usually look at up to 10 search results to find their answer. From my own personal research I find that most people find their answer to what they were searching for within the first 4 pages or else they will search using a different term or even a different search engine.

So as you can imagine, search engine optimization (SEO) is very important for a website because proper optimization can allow the website to reach first page rankings and can generate great amounts of traffic by doing so. Gaining a top spot compared to a spot on even the 5th page means a very large difference in the amount of traffic (website visitors) that that site will receive. Every website's goal should be to gain a top ranking for specific terms in the search engines.

Your website deserves visitors, after all that's most likely why you created it; for people to visit. SEO will bring visitors to your website but then it is up to your website design, appeal and sales pitch to entice the visitor to stay around, play games, talk, make a purchase, or whatever your website's function is.

Why is Search Engine Optimization important?

Search Engine Optimization is not an easy task, a lot of work has to be done to properly optimize a website for top results and if someone doesn't know what they are doing they can actually harm their search results or even get their site removed from the search engine results. I won't go into too much detail regarding specific search engine optimization techniques because there is many things to do and look for.

However, a great place to start is to choose appropriate keywords for your website's pages that you want associated with your website when people perform their search. Make sure you write down your keywords though for future reference because it will come very handy. Then whenever you write any new content for your site you should utilize your chosen keyword throughout your content. Don't use the keywords too many times though as doing so can cause negative results.

You will also want to go through the content you currently have on your site and optimize it for specific keywords. You may be asking what putting specific keywords throughout your pages does with regards to search engine optimization. When someone searched the search engine they search for keywords or terms, and the search engines go through their indexed websites and match what was searched with what is included in websites content, title, Meta data, and more. If your website is associated with what was searched it will then be able to appear in the results. This is just very basic as I am just letting you know some of the theory behind SEO but it is very important to optimize for keywords. Many websites do not do this and as a result, many don't achieve great search engine results. There is more behind how search engines rank websites, but just know that keyword optimization is a critical part of search engine optimization.

Another important factor for SEO is website linking. There are 2 main types of links: inbound and outbound. An inbound link is a link on another website that directs a user to your site and an outbound link is a link on your website that directs the user to another website. There are many ways to achieve good link for your site, one of my personal favorites is called 3WayLinks.

You may be thinking, no problem...I will just put many links of other sites I own to my site. But this isn't the case. You see, search engines actually take into consideration when ranking your site the number and quality of the sites that link to your site. This means that for best results the websites linking to your site should be relevant to the content of your site. It also helps when the linking sites are very popular as they will be indexed regularly by the search engines leading to your site being indexed more frequently.
